Minneapolis Mayor Supports ICE Protesters in Heated Confrontation with News

News’ Griff Jenkins and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (D) shared a tense exchange Wednesday because Frey referred to ICE protesters as “heroes” earlier this week.

During an interview with Frey on “News & Friends” Wednesday morning, Jenkins argued that protesters “have gone further” than necessary with their demonstrations after ICE Agent Jonathan Ross shot and killed Renee Good, 37, in Minneapolis.

“Just look at some of the videos, Mayor Frey, that we have seen of these protesters, many of whom you have praised,” Jenkins said. “You’ve called them heroes for being there exercising their First Amendment rights, but they’ve gone further. They’re blocking ICE operations.”

“We had thousands of protesters,” Frey began before Jenkins chimed in and exclaimed, “Take a look at some of the videos. You’ve seen these. Play them.”

“I am happy to see [the] video[s]. I’ve seen it live,” Frey replied before being interrupted again by Jenkins, who then played a video featuring Minneapolis. Protesters clashed with ICE agents, with some repeatedly shouting “shame.” Another woman appeared to yell at the officers: “Do you want to shoot me in the face?”

After Jenkins cited 18 U.S. Code 111 and mentioned protesters “throwing rocks, hitting cars, and interfering” with federal agents, Frey responded, telling Jenkins that there were “tens of thousands of people peacefully protesting in the streets” of Minneapolis, adding that protesters are “defending their neighbors” amid what he called “unconstitutional conduct by ICE.”

“ICE is not new. Our separation order in the city is not new,” he added. “ICE has been around for decades, as has our separation ordinance. What’s new is the way the Trump administration is currently behaving.”

On Monday, Frey praised ICE protesters in his city as “heroes” who “stand up for each other” amid the Trump administration’s sweeping immigration crackdown.

“We’re not going to back down. We’re not going to back down in Minneapolis, we’re not going to back down in Minnesota,” he added. “We stand up to the bullies.”

The mayor went viral for telling ICE to “get the hell out of Minneapolis” during a press conference on January 7. He also harshly criticized ICE for “destroying families” and “wreaking chaos on our streets” by “literally killing people” during that same press conference.
