STREET. Paul, Minnesota (AP) – Gilbert El Golden Retriever was at home with the Democratic leader and state representative of Minnesota Melissa Hortman and her husband when an armed man fatally shot the couple and mortally wounded his beloved dog. And he was with them again on Friday when Hortmans lay in the state in the Capitol in St. Paul.

He is everything, but certainly the first dog to receive the honor, after being killed after being seriously injured in the attack. The State previously granted the honor to 19 men, including a vice president, a Secretary of State of the United States, US senators, governors and a civil war veteran, according to the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library.

Hundreds of people waited outside the Capitol before they were allowed to enter the roundabout at noon to present their respects. Two pedestals sat between the Hortmans coffins, one for one arrangement of flowers and the other, for the golden urn that contains the remains of Gilbert.

A monument off the house of the house for hortmans included a box of cookie for dogs with milk bone with a sticky note that said: “For the best boy, Gilbert.”

“We have all had family, pets, and it is tragic to have the whole family lost at a time,” said Kacy Deschene, who arrived at the Champlin Suburb of Minneapolis.

The dog’s injuries were serious enough for surviving family members to make him sleep in a veterinary clinic in the hometown of Hortmans in Brooklyn Park, a suburb of Minneapolis. The clinic, the ally emergency veterinary service, called Gilbert “sweet and gentle” and “deeply loved” in a Gofundme site raising money for the care of local police dogs.

The volunteers of a non -profit organization that trains Service Dogs, helping Paws Inc., provided a small canine therapy for waiting mourners on Friday at the Capitol, working in the crowd with happy Goldenned. Hortmans provided a host home to dogs as part of the training of animals help, and one of them, Minnie, had graduated to help a veteran.
