A little -known opioid that is more fatal than fentanyl has led to a growing number of overdose deaths in recent years.

Nitazenes, a synthetic opioid class, originally developed as analgesics in the 1950s, but were never approved for use due to the high risk of overdose, according to a report by the Inter -American Commission on Drug Abuse Control (CICAD).

As of 2019, the nitazenes (benzimidazole -opioids) began entering the market of illicit drugs in Europe, where they have been informed on almost all continents.

Cicad’s report suggests that “the use of nitazen is a growing trend in North America and that availability is probably spreading through the Americas.”

The most frequent type of nitazen is isotonitazen (ISO), but at least a dozen others have been identified, according to the report.

The United States Drug Control Administration (DEA) classifies ISO as a drug from Annex 1, along with seven other nitazenos.

“Nitazenes are taking place in illicit laboratories abroad, mainly in places like China and India, and are being trafficked in the USA. Through the same channels used for fentanyl,” said Corey Humberg, a councilor with alcohol and drug license and executive director of the Massachusetts addiction center, News Digital said.

Because they are synthetic and cheap to do, they have become a popular option for illegal manufacturers, the expert said.

“As the authorities take energetic measures against fentanyl, traffickers turn to new synthetic opioids such as nitazenes to overcome the application,” Ferg continued.

“These drugs are cheap to do and easy to move. It is a pattern that we have seen before and now repeats now.”

Nitazenos are available in pills, powders, aerosols and other forms. They can be inuterized, smoked, injected or taken orally.

The greatest risk is power, since some types of nitazenos are several times stronger than fentanyl.

“These drugs are cheap to do and easy to move. It is a pattern that we have seen before and now repeats now.”

Dr. Jonathan Avery, vice president of addiction psychiatry in Newyork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, confirmed that nitazenes can be hundreds of times stronger than morphine and up to 10 times more powerful than fentanyl “, making the doses still small die.”

In addition to potentially fatal overdose, it is known that drugs cause dependence, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, disorientation, loss of consciousness, cardiac arrest and seizures, according to the CICAD report.

The other problem is that people generally do not know they are taking them.

“Nitazenes are often mixed with heroin, pressed or even stimulating pills, so someone might think they are using a thing and end up taking something completely different,” said Hamberg. “That unpredictability is what makes them so mortal.”

In addition to the danger of Nitazenes, it is that the tests are very limited, according to Dr. Ryan Marino, a medical toxicologist of Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio.

“Test strips are available that can help people detect things such as powdered drugs and pills for the presence of Nitazenos, but the most definitive tests are limited to more advanced toxicology laboratories, and also limited by the cost and response time,” he told News Digital.

“While test strips are useful, they are not a definitive way to rule out nitazenos in drugs, and the most advanced tests for nitazenes are not widely available, even in post mortem tests.”

Routine screens in the hospital and drugs in the workplace do not reliably detect Nitazenos, according to Avery.

“The application is difficult because producers constantly adjust chemical structures to evade laws and standard tests,” he said.

To prevent mortal overdose, Avery requested specialized tests and rapid drug verification tools to identify nitazenos in the street supply.

“Public awareness, generalized naloxone distribution and rapid drug verification are key to preventing deaths.”
