Most Americans feel that the Trump administration has not clearly explained America’s goals in the conflict with iran.
The explanation, or the perception that one is missing, is linked to whether people support it or not.
The longer Americans believe the conflict will last, the more they disapprove. Half the country believes it will be months or even years before it ends.
when they No I think the administration has explained it, they believe it will last. longer or not sure.
And perhaps the most immediate view is this: Right now, more Americans feel that military action will make the United States less secure than more secure.
Americans have their own variety of ideas about what it means administration objectives could be, and they believe there are many of them.
The people who say that think The objective is to stop nuclear weapons, stop terrorism or help the Iranian people tend to show solidarity.
Some also express a more cynical view, which they believe is to gain political advantage in the US.
In general, most Americans disapprove.
But the president’s Republican base, and especially MAGA, solidly backs the move. Most of them think it is making the U.S. further sure.

This survey recontacted Americans interviewed for the first time to our survey last week which was completed before the start of the airstrikes.
Last week, before the airstrikes began, slightly more people said they would approve of military action specifically to prevent nuclear weapons than say they approve of action in general today.
One reason for the difference: People who have since moved into disapproval think the administration hasn’t explained its goals. And they don’t think it will be a short conflict, but they think it will be long or they are not sure how long it will last.
A sizable two-thirds say the administration should get congressional approval for further military action.
(Republicans do not believe that is necessary, echoing the views they expressed regarding US military action in Venezuela.)

This News themezone/YouGov poll is based on a nationally representative sample of 1,399 American adults who were contacted again on March 2 and 3, 2026, after the start of US military action against Iran, following a initial survey conducted prior to U.S. military action on February 25-27, 2026 using a nationally representative sample of 2,264 U.S. adults. The margin of error for the total sample in the recontact survey is ± 3.2 points.
