NBC host has MTG

NBC’s Kristen Welker on Sunday grilled Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) for comparing COVID-19 mask mandates during the coronavirus pandemic to the treatment of Jews in Nazi Germany.

“In 2022, you spoke at a conference hosted by Nick Fuentes. He’s a white nationalist. You recently said that Hitler is, quote, ‘cool,'” Welker began. “Let me ask you what your perspective is right now. Do you think there is room in the Republican Party for Nick Fuentes and anyone who shares that ideology, that Hitler is great?”

“This is my situation and this is my belief about people’s speech. I will always defend the First Amendment and free speech, no matter what type of speech it is,” he responded. “Even speeches that I find abhorrent or that I don’t agree with, because I think that makes us uniquely American.”

“What concerns me is that when we moved toward censorship, and we saw that happen during COVID, I myself was permanently banned from my own Twitter account because I spoke out against the FDA’s rushed approval of COVID vaccines,” she said. “And I spoke out against lockdowns and forced masking. And, you know, when I see people saying that certain types of speech should be censored, and we’ve been hearing that lately, that worries me a lot.”

Greene’s Twitter and Facebook accounts were suspended in January 2022 for spreading misinformation about COVID-19.

Several months before her online suspension, Greene faced backlash for comparing then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s decision to continue requiring masks in the House to the Nazi persecution of Jewish people during the Holocaust.

Noting that she believes censoring speech is “something we need to take seriously as Americans,” Greene told Welker, “we don’t have to agree with each other, and we certainly can disagree, but we should overwhelmingly agree that free speech should be protected.”

Welker then directly confronted Greene.

“During COVID, lockdowns were compared to the Holocaust,” he said. “I understand your point about free speech, but let me press you, because Nick Fuentes has said on his podcast, quote, ‘Hitler was incredible. Hitler was…'”

Greene interrupted to say she had been misquoted.

“No, that’s a misquote. Kirsten, that’s a misquote. That’s a misquote. That’s not correct,” he said. “I compared vaccination cards, the obligation to get vaccinated to be able to keep a job, buy or sell, or be admitted to restaurants. I compared that.”

Then he backtracked even further and said, “I wasn’t comparing. The Holocaust was horrible. I’m not comparing anything to that.”

Elsewhere in the interview, the Republican doubled down on her previous claims that she does not know Fuentes, but did not denounce his comments.

“I don’t even have his phone number. He doesn’t have my phone number,” she added before claiming she spoke at the event “because it was largely attended by young Americans, and I care about that generation.”

“I’m not going to get involved in weighing who deserves to be where,” he added later.
