The governor of California, Gavin Newsom, a spine committed on the side of Donald Trump, told the president on Monday that he is prepared to draw back to the districts of California in favor of the Democrats if he does not ask Texas and other red states to stop their own redistribution plans of GOP districts.

Newsom made the threat in a letter to Trump, who supports an effort led by the Republican party to re -draw five Texas districts in favor of Republicans, something that the president has said that his party has “right” before the intermediate works of 2026.

“If you do not retire, I will be forced to lead an effort to re -draw the maps in California to compensate for the maps in the red states,” Newsom promised. “But if the other states cancel their redistribution efforts of districts, we will happily do the same. And American democracy will be better for it.”

It is not a step that takes light, Newsom continued, who said he believes that the legislative district maps should be crossed through “independent efforts directed by citizens”, not through political maneuvers.

“You are playing with fire, risking the destabilization of our democracy, while you know that California can neutralize any gain you expect to obtain,” he continued. “This attempt to manipulate Congress maps to maintain power before a single vote is issued in the 2026 elections is an affront to US democracy.”

The White House did not immediately return a request for comments on the threat of Newsom.

The letter occurs after the Democratic members of the Texas State Chamber left the State to deny the Republicans a quorum in the vote of redistribution of districts, outraging the governor Greg Abbott (R), who sought to arrest them and eliminate at least one of them from the position.

Republicans also lead the redistribution efforts of districts in other states, even in Indiana, Missouri, Ohio and South Carolina.

In an appearance in News on Monday, Abbott said that California and New York were already in Gerrymander and promised to chase districts even more friendly for the Republican Party in Texas if Newsom continues with the plan that described Trump.

“If California believes that they will move your needle to the extreme and eliminate five republican numbers from the United States Congress there, Texas will not do five: we will add 10 republican seats more using the same procedure they are using in California,” he said.
