“The army identified the individual near the MDL, monitored and surveillance,” said the chiefs of joint staff, or JCS, in a statement.

Then “he successfully carried out a standard guide operation to ensure custody,” he added.

The operation took about 20 hours, according to Seoul, after the man was detected by a military surveillance device at some point between 3:00 and 4:00 am, local time, Thursday.

The mission of guiding him safely to the south involved a considerable number of South Korean troops, said the JCS, and took place in an area difficult to navigate due to dense vegetation and the risks of land mines.

The man stayed mainly during the day, and the South Korean army approached him at night.

According to the JCS, he voluntarily followed the troops after they offered to guide him safely from the DMZ.

He said that “the relevant authorities” will investigate the detailed circumstances of the incident.

North Koreans are generally delivered to the Seoul Intelligence Agency for detection when they reach the south.

History of defections

The incident occurs after a North Korean soldier defected south when crossing the MDL in August last year.

Tens of thousands of North Koreans have fled to South Korea since the Peninsula was divided by the war in the 1950s, and most went up to neighboring China first, then entered a third country like Thailand before finally reaching the south.

Decerions through the terrestrial border that divides the peninsula are relatively rare.

The successful escape number fell significantly since 2020 after the North sealed its borders, supposedly with the sight orders along the Earth’s border with China, to avoid the propagation of COVID-19.

No unusual activities have been detected by the North Korean army, said JCS on Friday.

The president of South Korea, Lee Jae Myung, who assumed the position last month, promised a more misleading approach to Pyongyang compared to his predecessor Awkish Yoon Suk Yeol.

“Politics and diplomacy should be handled without emotion and approach with reason and logic,” Lee said on Thursday.

“Cutting the dialogue completely is really silly.”
