Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sanchez Bezos, are sponsoring this year’s Met Gala and people aren’t thrilled.
The event has traditionally been supported by major fashion houses, including last year’s event, sponsored by Louis Vuitton. The announcement of the partnership with Bezos sparked an immediate reaction on social media. The Met’s official Instagram account revealed this year’s sponsorship and theme on Monday.
“Celebrate fashion as an art form this spring at The Met! Opening May 10, 2026, ‘Costume Art’ is The Costume Institute’s annual exhibition.” the post says, accompanied by a video showing the Winged Victory of Samothrace statue and a preview of the upcoming fashion showcase.

At the end of the clip the couple’s names appeared. That’s when the reactions took a turn.
“Bezos sponsored that we really are in an advanced stage of capitalism,” one person wrote on Instagram. “Billionaires supporting other billionaires for their fancy party.”
Another commenter said: “Really horrible ending when Jeff Bezos showed up.”
Users also shared a lot of opinions about X.
“It was inevitable that Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos, thirsty for cultural domination, would sink their claws into the Met Gala through sponsorship,” wrote one user. “All of your media pitch has led up to this exact moment. When THAT takeover announcement comes…don’t be surprised.”
The Met Gala is an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and also serves as the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibition.
