“The Church recognizes in these witnesses: I am thinking of those who report on the war even at the expense of their lives, the court of those who defend the dignity, justice and the right of people to be informed, because only the informed people can make free decisions,” said Leo. “The suffering of these jailed journalists challenges consciousness. Of the nations and the international community, asking everyone to safeguard the beautiful gift of freedom of expression and the press.”

Leo opened the meeting with some words in English, joking that if the crowd was still awake and applauded at the end, it mattered more than the ovation that greeted him.

Returning to Italian, he thanked journalists for their work that covered the papal transition and urged them to use peace words.

“Peace begins with each of us: in the way we look at others, we listen to others and talk about others,” he said. “In this sense, the way we communicate is of fundamental importance: we must say ‘no’ to the war of words and images, we must reject the paradigm of the war.”

The journalists that Leo greeted after his brief speech shared some of the few words they exchanged with him, including the suggestions that the Vatican’s plans are moving forward so that I travel to Turkey to commemorate an important event in the Catholic-Orthodox relations: the 1,700 anniversary of the Council of Nicaa, the first ecumenical advice of Cristianity.
