Professional wrestling icon Mick Foley is ending his relationship with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) over the organization’s ties to President Donald Trump.

The WWE Hall of Famer made the announcement on social media Tuesday, citing Trump’s “incredibly cruel” reaction to the Dec. 14 murder of actor-director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, as “the final straw for me.”

“I no longer wish to represent a company that coddles a man seemingly so lacking in compassion while leading our country toward autocracy,” he wrote on Instagram. “Last night, I informed WWE Talent Relations that I would not be making any appearances for the company while this man remains in office. Additionally, I will not be signing a new contract with Legends when my current one expires in June.”

He went on to note, “I love WWE, I will always treasure my time with them, and I am deeply grateful for all the opportunities they have given me. But, in the words of Popeye the Sailor, ‘I take all I can, and I can’t take it anymore.'”

Foley, 60, went by Cactus Jack, Mankind and Dude Love throughout his professional wrestling career. Upon retiring from the ring, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013, coincidentally the same year as Trump, who was honored for his numerous guest appearances at televised WWE events.

News reached out to WWE representatives for comment on Foley’s resignation but did not immediately receive a response.

However, among those who expressed support was former WWE manager Jim Cornette, who wrote that Foley “just became my favorite person in the world” in a post Tuesday afternoon.

I don’t think Mick Foley is on Twitter nor would I tag him, but I want to publicly state that although I’ve always liked him, he has become my favorite person in the world. I wish all the boys had his character and, more importantly, his morals.

The president’s decades-long connection to WWE has been front and center during his second term. Wrestling icon Hulk Hogan, who died in July, made a memorable appearance at the 2024 Republican National Convention, where he hailed Trump as “a true American hero.” Earlier this year, former WWE CEO Linda McMahon, who is the estranged wife of former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, was named Secretary of Education.

Foley, meanwhile, has been an outspoken critic of Trump for years. Shortly before the 2024 presidential election, he called Trump “an obvious self-serving crook” in a blistering video on social media while endorsing former Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee.

He concluded his video with a “direct” message to Trump: “I made the decision not to call you an idiot, even though you are.”

Foley is just one of many public figures on both sides of the political aisle who have expressed outrage following Trump’s comments following the Reiners’ deaths on Sunday. In a lengthy post on his Truth Social platform, the president suggested that Reiner and his wife had died from a “massive, unyielding, incurable affliction with a paralyzing illness known as TRUMP DISORDER SYNDROME.”
