More Americans who ever choose not drinking alcohol, according to a new Gallup survey.
Only 54% of respondents in the annual Gallup consumption habits made last month say they consume alcohol, which is the lowest recorded in almost 90 years.
“This coincides with a growing belief among Americans that moderate alcohol consumption is bad for one, now the majority view for the first time,” Gallup said in a press release.
The National Institute of Alcohol and Alcoholism Abuse cites nine body systems affected by alcohol consumption.

“Current research points to health risks even at low amounts of alcohol consumption, regardless of the type of drink,” says its website.
Those who drink are drinking less, Gallup reported, averaging around 2.8 drinks a week. In the last two years, Republicans have reported a strong drop in drinking habits, but the percentage of Democrats has remained quite stable.

The largest number of Americans who reported drinking alcohol, from 68 to 71%, were registered between 1974 and 1981, Gallup said.
Beer remains the “most preferred alcohol,” said the global analysis and advice firm, adding that “[h]As three consecutive years of decrease in the rate of alcohol consumption in the United States were documented as research that supports the assembly of messages ‘No amount of alcohol is safe’ “.

Gallup does not believe that the decrease in alcohol consumption is caused by people who change to other substances that alter mood, in particular recreational marijuana, which is not legal in approximately half of the states of the United States.
