The morning after California voters approved a redistricting measure that would flip several seats for Democrats in next year’s elections, the state Republican Party filed a federal lawsuit to stop the effort.

The lawsuit from the California Republican Party and several of its leaders argues that the proposed new maps, which Proposition 50 now allows the state legislature to vote on, are unconstitutional because they use race as a factor in drawing the new districts.

“As the first Polynesian elected to the state legislature, I understand the diversity and beauty this state has, and what we’ve seen with Proposition 50: These maps are completely diminishing the voices of other groups to benefit other groups,” Assemblyman David Tangipa, who represents seven inland counties in the state legislature, said at a news conference Wednesday.

California Republican Party Chairwoman Corrin Rankin said the lawsuit aimed to ensure “fair and equal representation for every Californian, no matter the color of their skin.”

Mike Columbo, an attorney with Dhillon Law Group representing the Republican plaintiffs, said the main problem with the new maps is that the districts were drawn incorrectly to “increase the power of Latino voters,” who make up the state’s largest ethnic group.

California Democrats introduced Proposition 50 to combat what they say was clear gerrymandering in Texas and other red states ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. A statement from Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D) press office said they were not concerned about the lawsuit.

“We have not reviewed the lawsuit, but if it is from the California Republican Party and the law firm of Harmeet Dhillon, it will fail,” the office said. “Good luck, losers.”

State Republicans have already tried, unsuccessfully, to stop redistricting through multiple legal challenges. A federal judge struck down one of those efforts Monday, saying the plaintiffs failed to prove their claims that Proposition 50 constituted “an unprecedented interstate assault on representative democracy.”

President Donald Trump also stated that he will sue California over the redistricting effort, saying in August that he was “going to file a lawsuit very soon and I think we’re going to be very successful in it.” You have yet to file the challenge.
