Savannah Guthrie
The mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie is missing in Arizona and authorities have made troubling statements about her well-being.
Authorities said Monday they were treating the 84-year-old man’s disappearance as a crime.
“I hope we find her safe and sound, but we cannot ignore what is in front of us,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said of Nancy Guthrie after authorities found matters of “serious concern” in a search of her home near Tucson.
Nanos, citing her family, said Guthrie has “physical ailments” that limit her mobility, but that she is cognitively healthy.
She has been missing since Saturday and was last seen at her residence that night, according to a missing persons pamphlet.
Nanos said she may have been exposed to the cold overnight. Planes, drones and helicopters are used in the search.
A law enforcement visit to Nancy Guthrie’s home seemed to heighten the urgency.
“We get these calls pretty frequently and we do a good job searching the area,” Nanos said. “But this one stood out because of what was described to us at the scene and what we found just by looking at the scene.” He declined to give more details.
The woman’s disappearance was the lead story on Monday’s “Today” show. Host Craig Melvin told viewers it’s a “deeply personal story for us.”
“Our focus remains on the safe return of our beloved mother,” an absent Savannah Guthrie said in a statement read on NBC’s morning show.
A “Today” spokesperson told News on Monday that the Guthrie family is “working closely” with authorities and urged anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
“The family is grateful for the help, thoughts and prayers,” the spokesperson wrote in an email.
