A 13-year-old boy died Thursday after being attacked by a shark at a popular beach on Brazil’s east coast, the state government said in a statement.

The attack occurred off the coast of Chifre beach in Pernambuco, a tourist hotspot in Brazil, the State Committee for Monitoring Shark Incidents (CEMIT) said in a press release.

The child was taken to hospital but “did not survive his injuries,” CEMIT added.

Dr. Levy Dalton, who treated the victim, said that the boy had been bitten on the right thigh, before suffering cardiorespiratory arrest, reported UOL Notícias Brasil.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t resuscitate him, (…) unfortunately we couldn’t do much for him,” Dalton told reporters, according to the outlet.

Brazilian media G1 identified the victim as Deivson Rocha Dantas. According to G1, the boy’s cousin, Lídia Emanuele, told TV Globo that the shark “ate almost his entire leg” and was pulled from the water by other bathers of approximately the same age.

Dozens of beaches along Pernambuco’s turquoise coasts have received shark warnings, authorities said, adding that Chifre beach had issued four such signals to bathers.

However, CEMIT said it would strengthen tracking of the sharks after the boy’s death and reinstate a suspended program to track the creatures with microchips.
