The representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (DN.Y.) has backed Zohran Mamdani for the mayor of New York City, giving the progressive state assemblyman a hopeful impulse only weeks before the Democratic primaries that former governor Andrew Cuomo has dominated in surveys.
“The Mamdani assembly has demonstrated a real capacity in the field of assembling a coalition of working class New Yorkers that is stronger to lead the pack,” Ocasio-Cortez told The New York Times Thursday, before the launch of a formal support. “In the final stretch of the race, we have to be very real about it.”
In a statement that recognizes its support, Mamdani praised Ocasio-Cortez as a “unique leader in the generation that has led the fight for workers in Congress.”

“June 24, with [Ocasio-Cortez’s] Support and this movement behind us, we will do the same, ”he said, referring to the rapid coupling primaries of the race.
Mamdani, 33, is similar to Ocasio-Cortez, 35 years old, since he is a Democratic socialist from New York City, a millennium and a color person who has rapidly increased in popularity through the base efforts in his shared district of Queens.
He has promised to freeze increases in rent in apartments stabilized by rentals, offer free groceries for children, open of edibles directed by the city to reduce food prices and make urban buses free.
While Cuomo has dominated its competitors in the surveys since the beginning of 2025, Mamdani has increased in recent weeks, winning 23 points in a recent survey, while staying tight in a second place range among the nine Democratic candidates.

In the first elementary debate on Wednesday night, Mamdani and his competitors criticized in Cuomo about the campaign donations he received from the Ultra Rico, which Mamdani said they put it in the pocket of those who chose President Donald Trump. They also highlighted the accusations of inappropriate sexual behavior that led to the 2021 resignation of Cuomo.

Cuomo, who has denied accusations of inappropriate sexual behavior and the influence of political donors, meanwhile, attacked Mamdani as too inexperienced and green to lead.
“Donald Trump would go through Mr. Mamdani as a hot knife through the butter,” Cuomo said. “It has been in the government 27 minutes. It happened three bills, that is all it has done.”
The head of New York City, Eric Adams, is postulated for re -election as an independent and did not participate in the debate.
