A sharp attack on Friday at the busy central train station in the German city of Hamburg left several injured people, some of them in potentially deadly condition, authorities said.

Police said a 39 -year -old woman, a German citizen, was arrested on the scene without placing resistance and believes, after watching video images, he acted alone. The police also assured the knife.

The attacker attacked people on the platform between tracks 13 and 14 at the station around 6 pm local time, according to the police. The station in the center of Hamburg, the second largest city in Germany, is an important center for local, regional and long distance trains.

The Hamburg Fire Service initially said that six people suffered injuries that threatened life, while three others were seriously injured and three had light injuries, the German news agency DPA reported. The police, however, said later that there were still “valid figures”, but that “several” people had potentially mortal injuries.

There was no immediate indication of any political reason, and the investigators were investigating whether the suspect could have been mentally ill, said police spokesman Florian Abbenseth.

Deutsche Bahn’s rail operator said he was “deeply surprised” by the attack. Four tracks at the station closed on Friday night, and some long -distance trains were delayed or diverted.

Wearing weapons, including knives, is prohibited at the station and in local transport in Hamburg.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s office said the German leader was horrified by the news and told the mayor of Hamburg Peter Tscherecher in a call on Friday night that “my thoughts are with the victims and their relatives.”
