Suicide bomber attacks the Syrian church near Damascus during the Mass

A suicide terrorist in Syria detonated on Sunday inside a church full of people, state television and a war monitor.
The explosion in Dweil’a on the outskirts of Damascus took place while people prayed within the Mar Elias church. The War Monitor based in Great Britain, the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights, says that there were 30 people injured and killed, but the exact numbers are not clear. Some local media reported that the children were among the victims.

The attack was the first of its kind in Syria in years, and occurs as Damascus under his de facto Islamist government, trying to win the support of minorities. As President Ahmad al-Sharaa struggles to exercise authority throughout the country, there have been concerns about the presence of sleeping cells of extremist groups in the country devastated by war.

The security forces and the first responders rushed to the Church. An eyewitness said in a widely distributed video online that the attacker entered and began shooting people there before detonating an explosive vest he was wearing.
