Tammy Duckworth says Mike Waltz will have
Senator Tammy Duckworth said Sunday that Mike Waltz can expect a “brutal” confirmation hearing to be an ambassador to the United Nations, after he renounced abruptly last week as national security advisor of President Donald Trump.
“It will be a brutal and brutal audience. It is not qualified for work, just by nature that he participated in this signal chain,” said Illinois Democrat to Margaret Brennan in “Face the Nation” of News.
Duckworth was referring to the mass national security scandal earlier this year, when the Atlantic editor was inadvertently added to a group talk with a signal that included several officials at the cabinet level, including Waltz, the Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance, among others. The filtering chat revealed that these leaders were using the unasperial communication line to share classified details minute by minute of the military attacks planned in Yemen.
Each person in the signal chat must be fired for not speaking, Duckworth said Sunday, calling Hegseth the “most inappropriate and inappropriate defense secretary in the history of our nation.” But almost immediately after the reports revealed that Waltz was renouncing as national security advisor, Trump announced plans to nominate him as an ambassador to the United Nations.
“He is failing, right? He is failing in his work and being promoted to be an ambassador,” Duckworth said. “That is not what our nation needs in the United Nations. This is a very dangerous moment for our national security.”

According to Politico, the Waltz team regularly establishes signal chats to coordinate the policy work in Ukraine, China, Gaza, Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Waltz also used his personal email account for government communications, according to The Washington Post. Wired reported that an avemo account suspected of belonging to Waltz was established as a public, which allowed possible adversaries to track those associated with him through transactions.
“Now we are going to put someone who is completely incompetent at the UN, who will have to perform these negotiations, talk to our allies, try to take them aboard with us while we oppose our adversaries,” said Duckworth. “And continuing to fail is not what we need in people who represent this country.”
Waltz did not submit to the Senate confirmation as National Security Advisor, but will require a hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to be confirmed as an ambassador. A veteran of the Iraq war, Duckworth is both in the Foreign Relations and Armed Services Committees.
“I’m not open to vote for him, no,” he said. “Because he has already shown that he is unable to do the most basic, which is to handle classified information.”

Trump first nominated the representative Elise Stefanik (RN.y.) for the role of ambassador before withdrawing his name about the concerns about the thin majority of the Republicans of the House of Representatives. The president said Thursday that Rubio will assume the position of Interim National Security Advisor, in addition to his existing responsibilities as Secretary of State, Interim National Archivist and Interim Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development.
Duckworth voted in January to confirm Rubio to direct the State Department, but said Sunday that he is not sure that he can balance the growing number of hats they have given him.
