Dhaka, Bangladesh – A Bangladesh Air Force training plane crashed into a school campus in the capital, Dhaka, shortly after takeoff on Monday, killing at least 20 people, including the pilot and wounding more than 100, authorities said. According to the army and a fire official, the F-7 BGI plane made in El Chino crashed into the school campus and the University of Milestone, in the neighborhood of Uttara, in the afternoon when the students attended classes.
The army said the plane took off at 1:06 pm local time and crashed shortly after, burning immediately. The cause was not clear immediately.
The local media indicated that most of the wounded in Dhaka on Monday were students. The relatives panicked the scene when rescuers, using tricycle rickshaws or what was available, transported local hospitals.

A desperate scene developed after the accident. Local residents and rescuers led students injured on their laps, while worried parents ran frantically. A father ran with his cradled daughter in his arms. A mother shouted, after having found her youngest son, but desperately looking for her old man.
The interim leader of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, promised an investigation into the accident, expressing his deep sadness for the “heartbreaking accident” in Milestone School and College.
In a statement, he regretted the “irreparable” loss suffered by “Air Force, students, parents, teachers, personal and others,” called “a moment of deep national pain.”

Rafiqa Taha, a student who was not present at the time of the accident, told News by telephone that the school, with about 2,000 students, offers primary classes to 12th grade.
