The bridge under construction in China collapses in the Yellow River, killing at least 12 people, state media say.

Beijing – At least 12 people were killed and four missing after a part of a bridge under construction collapsed on Friday in northwestern China, state media reported. A video posted by the state station CCTV showed that the center of the section of the bridge suddenly yielded and immersed itself in the waters of the yellow river underneath.

The cause was a steel cable failure, said the state agency Xinhua.

The People’s Daily newspaper said that 15 workers and a project manager were in place at that time. The newspaper initially reported the death toll like seven by the newspaper, but the subsequent reports put it in six and then the state television doubled the toll.

Industrial accidents are quite common in China due to vague regulations and lax safety standards.

In December last year, 13 people disappeared after a cave in a construction site for an important railway in the city of Shenzhen in southern China. There were no survivors reports.
