The former Spanish soccer player who kissed a player at the World Cup is thrown with eggs at the presentation of a book

Luis Rubiales was attacked with eggs by his own uncle when the former president of the Spanish Football Federation presented his memoirs on Thursday night in which he recounted his fall after kiss a player to the Women’s World Cup 2023.

Rubiales was sitting on a stool on a low stage when he jumped and spun quickly trying to avoid three eggs that were thrown at him. One hit the back of his dark jacket and another splashed against a screen behind him as he charged toward the small audience.

“A man came in who I later saw was my uncle, who is a conflictive man, and always has been,” Rubiales told reporters. “He had some eggs and he threw some at me, but I didn’t know what he had in his hands, and when I first saw him I thought he might be carrying a gun.”

Spanish media reported that the uncle was Luis Rubén Rubiales, an actor who has appeared on several national television programs.

Spanish police told The News they arrested the egg thrower. No reason was immediately given for the incident. One video shows a group of men in the audience grabbing the guy immediately after he threw the eggs and escorting him away.

Rubiales also had a fight with another uncle, Juan Rubiales, several years ago when Juan worked for him at the federation.

His book “Matar a Rubiales” is a 500-page version of his professional death after kissing Spanish forward Jenni Hermoso during the 2023 Women’s World Cup awards ceremony. It was the first time that the Spanish women’s team took the title. According to his editor, Rubiales claims to be the victim of a “conspiracy of different powers in Spanish public life,” including the Government and “the lucrative world of feminism.”

Rubiales has always denied having kissed Hermoso without his consent. After initially holding on to power Amid a national uproar, he resigned immense pressure from government, football officials, players and fans.

At the beginning of this year it was found guilty of sexual assault by unsolicited kiss by a Spanish court. He was fined more than $11,000 and ordered not to come within 650 feet of Hermosa or contact her for one year. Prosecutors had pushed for him to spend more than two years in prison. Rubiales was acquitted of a separate charge alleging that he and other officials pressured Hermoso to support him after the kiss.

Hermoso testified in court that Rubiales’ actions “tarnished” what should have been “one of the happiest days” of his life.

“I spent years fighting to win titles for my team, like the World Cup,” he said. “But everything that has happened to me means that I have not been able to enjoy anything from the moment I set foot in Madrid. I am a world champion, but it seems that, until today, my life has been on standby. Honestly, I have not been able to live freely.”

Rubiales, 48, is also under scrutiny by Spanish authorities investigating his 2020 deal to move the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia.
