The former speeches writer is alarm in Trump 2.0 with a terrifying historical comparison
David Frum, a former record writer for George W. Bush, used an opinion article in the Atlantic to share a terrifying forecast of a subsequent America Trump, underlining the “terribly clear message” he is sending in his second term.
Frum looked towards the corruption scandal of the Telera dome under Warren G. Harding and the Watergate scandal under Richard Nixon, pointing out that the president involved of the president “accepted that he had done wrong, that the culprit should be punished, and that these misdeeds should never be repeated.”
“Any considence of Trump’s presidency seems more likely to look like the sequelae of the civil war: reactionary losers who tried to overthrow the constitution of the United States can recognize themselves beaten, but they will not be badly recognized,” he wrote.
“If you don’t recognize that, what confidence can someone feel trying again if you have the opportunity?”
Frum, a frequent critic of the president since the 2016 elections, said Trump’s revenge tour in his current administration, his recruitment of loyal to the Federal Government and the recent FBI raid at the house of former national security advisor John Bolton.
“In this second term of Trump, things continue to happen that they would have seemed scandalous, impossible, only a few months before. Every day, there is a new movement far from the rule of law, towards an arbitrary and corrupt personal government,” Frum wrote, a personnel writer for the Atlantic.
“Among the fearful questions by pressing the country: how does the United States become?”

Frum emphasized that the “government is quickly changing” under Trump also, with immigration and application of customs transforming into a “enormous paramilitary force with personnel hired by the pro-trump zeal” and his family in “hundreds of millions of dollars in gifts, tips and payments” while ignoring the ethical rules subsequent to the busting. “
“Even if the Chamber changes hands in 2026, even if a president is elected in 2028 that has a healthy respect for the rule of law, the perversion of the second term of Trump will not get rid of easily,” he wrote.
He continued: “Trump is teaching his many supporters that public office is just a set of revenge, that there is no difference between the government that begs with a former president for 17 months to return stolen secret documents and a president in service using claims on documents to aim a critic for reprisal.”
