The maintenance of paper receipts for only 10 seconds can present health risks, researchers warn
Health researchers are playing the alarm on an endocrine disruptor that is commonly found in paper receipts, and they say they don’t take long to absorb the chemist.
In a statement of April 14, the Environmental Health Center (CEH) announced a violation notice for 32 retailers who allegedly had high levels of bisphenol S (BPS) on their receipts.

The organization described the bisphenol S (BPS) as the “less known but harmful chemical cousin for BPA in the receipt role”, and described the organic compound as “hormone disruptors.”

“BPS, like [Bisphenol A] … Imitate estrogen and can interrupt the normal functioning of the body, including metabolism, growth and development, and reproduction, “said the statement.

The statement said that having a BPS receipt for only 10 seconds could have serious health consequences.
“According to these studies and evidence of an independent laboratory, the concentrations were so high that playing only one BPS receipt for 10 seconds resulted in an exhibition above the level of safe port, which requires a clear and reasonable warning for consumers,” said CEH Science leaders, Mihir Vohra, in the press release.

CEH declared that a lawsuit will be filed against the alleged offenders unless they accept “to provide clear and reasonable warnings” to consumers or “reformulate such products to eliminate BPS exhibitions.”
Retailers will also have to pay an “appropriate civil fine.”
The organization advised consumers to reject paper receipts whenever possible.

“Store workers who must handle receipts should wear gloves if possible or avoid using alcohol-based hands before handling a receipt, since BP absorption can significantly increase,” said CEH Senior director Shakoora Azimi-Gaylon in the statement.
“The receipts are made of thermal paper, which should not be recycled because they contain bisphanols such as BPA and BPS, which can contaminate the recycling current and raise health and environment risks.”

News senior medical analyst, Dr. Marc Siegel, said digital receipts are more frequent than ever.
“We are definitely moving in the direction of digital receipts anyway,” the medical expert to News Digital told.
Siegel also noted that many Americans are exposed to bisphenol A (BPA) without noticing it, for example, it can commonly be found in cases of smartphones, despite not being found on iPhones.

BPS has been analyzed in recent years for its potential to negatively impact people’s health.
