A man has died after being absorbed by a magnetic resonance machine.
The accident occurred on July 16 in the Magnetic Resonance of the Nassau Open in Westbury, New York, according to a press release from the Nassau County Police Department on Long Island.
The officers responded to a 911 call around 4:30 pm in the center of MRI, which provides diagnostic radiology services.

“Upon arrival, the officers were informed that a 61 -year -old man entered an unauthorized magnetic resonance room (MRI) while the scan was in progress,” said the statement.
“The male victim carried a large metal chain around her neck, which made him attract the machine, which resulted in a medical episode.”

The man was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds the next day, on July 17.
The investigation is ongoing, according to the Police Department.
Nassau Open MRI affirms on its website that anything metallic should be eliminated before magnetic resonance, including headphones, partial plates, postpy dentures, jewelry and hair pins.

On a web page that details the benefits and risks of the IRM, the United States Food and Medicines Administration (FDA) points out that “the strong and static magnetic field will attract magnetic objects (from small items such as keys and cell phones, to large and heavy elements such as oxygen tanks and floor shock absorbers) and can cause damage to the scanner or injuries to the patient or medical professionals if those objects are converted into projects.”
“The careful detection of the people and objects that enter the MR environment is essential to ensure that nothing enters the magnetic area that can become a projectile.”

For patients with magnetic implants, external devices and medical devices, there is a risk that magnetic resonance “pull magnetic materials” and causes “unwanted movement” of the device, the same source warns.
The FDA also points out that the “adverse events” related to magnetic resonance scans are “very rare.”
Of millions of magnetic resonance explorations in the US. EU. Each year, the agency receives around 300 reports of adverse events, mainly burns and other thermal lesions.

“Other informed problems include projectile event injuries (objects that are drawn towards the magnetic resonance scanner), crushed and pinching fingers of the patient’s table, patient falls and hearing loss or a timbre in the ear (tinnitus),” says the FDA.

The only important problem with a magnetic resonance machine, a doctor warned, is that the magnetic function is never turned off. “This means that when approaching a magnetic resonance machine, it is impossible to be close to it with anything magnetic without those clothes or device taking the device,” he said. Magnetic resonance is a machine that uses a great magnet to produce “very intricate images” of the human body, according to Kenneth J. Perry, MD, an emergency doctor who attended a doctor in Charleston, South Carolina.
This can be very useful to capture images of specific parts of the body, he said, such as spinal cord, brain or pregnant abdomen.

“Unlike other image modalities, such as X -rays or computerized tomography, it does not use radiation, which means that it is safe for children and pregnant women,” Perry told News Digital.

It is better to discuss with the care team in advance about any possible concern related to the safety of magnetic resonance, as implemented devices, a doctor advised. (Istock)
“This is different from a CT scanner, which is only causing radiation at the time it is when you get images.”
The best way to prevent this type of accident is to have a “robust magnetic resonance protocol,” Perry advised.
“Most hospitals will have different areas integrated in the magnetic resonance process. Within each area, there is a discussion about which devices or pieces of clothing are safe for magnetic resonance,” said the doctor.
In the real area of the machine, there should be no magnetic material in patients.
“In the end, magnetic resonance is a very safe image modality that can provide very useful and important information to doctors.”
“Adhering to these very important protocols will be very useful for preventing important problems,” said Perry.
