What is cortisol?
Cortisol is a hormone released by the adrenal glands in the kidneys. Usually, he triggers when a person is experiencing stressful conditions, helping them to stay alert and providing them with energy to deal with the challenging situation, according to the Cleveland Clinic website.
“Cortisol is an important hormone that is released when its body can be stressed, and is involved in glucose metabolism and reducing inflammation,” said Dr. Frederick Davis, interim vice president of emergency medicine at the Jewish Medical Center of Long Island, Northwell Health in New Hyde Park, New York, to News Digital.

The hormone also helps regulate blood pressure, blood sugar and sleep-vigilia cycle, and can also help reinforce the immune system, according to health experts.
While cortisol is important for survival, health problems can occur when there is too much or very little of the hormone in the body.

When the hormone is at a consistently high level, it can lead to inflammation and a weakened immune system, said the Cleveland clinic, along with sleep problems, anxiety, high blood pressure, weight gain and fatigue.
“Cortisol is not necessarily the enemy,” said Caroline Susie, a dietitian registered in Dallas, Texas, News Digital. Susie, spokesman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, confirmed that cortisol is “essential for health” and “is not inherently harmful unless it is chronically elevated or poor.”

Instead of looking for a glass of wine to relax, social networks influencers claim that this simulated appointment can reduce high cortisol levels, making them feel more relaxed and energetic, and, in some cases, helping them lose weight.

Cortisol cocktail ingredients contain vitamin C, potassium, magnesium and sodium, which are nutrients that can be exhausted due to stress.
“Cortisol is not necessarily the enemy.”
Davis recognized the potential benefits of the drink.
“Ingredients such as coconut water have a series of electrolytes, such as magnesium, which participates in muscle and nervous function, as well as immune and cardiovascular health,” Davis told News Digital.

Other ingredients can help guarantee adequate hydration, the doctor added.
Davis warned, however, that when it comes to reducing cortisol levels, publications on social networks can be misleading.

“While many of the components in these cocktails have indirect effects on stress reduction, there have been no direct studies to show its effectiveness in reducing cortisol through this cocktail,” he told News Digital.
Susie reiterated that although drinks have some nutritional value, it has not been shown that cortisol or stress has significantly affect, and can be high in sugar or sodium. Individuals must “dismiss the ‘cortisol balance’ and focus on holistic well -being,” he advised.
Healthy ways of relaxing
Instead of “pursuing specific hormone hacks,” Susie said it is important to form fundamental habits, such as following a healthy diet, monitoring caffeine intake, exercising and prioritizing sleep hygiene.

“Cortisol follows a circadian rhythm, reaching its maximum point shortly after waking up and decreasing at night. The interrupted dream can throw this,” he told News Digital.
The expert also suggested trying relaxation techniques, such as breathing exercises and other activities.

“Meditation, yoga, time in nature, creative hobbies: everyone helps change the fight or flight body to rest and digest,” said Susie.
It is important to talk to a medical care provider about persistent symptoms such as fatigue, sleep problems, humor changes or weight fluctuations, he added.
