A South African court on Thursday sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for kidnapping and selling her six -year -old daughter, in a case that horrified the country.

Joshlin Smith disappeared in February last year since his home in Saldanha Bay, a fishing city to 85 miles north of Cape Town, and has never been found.

His mother, racquel “Kelly” Smith, was declared guilty of kidnapping and selling to the young womanis reported by 20,000 Rand ($ 1,100).

Judge Nathan Erasmus ruled that Smith, 35, and his two coacked, a boyfriend and a mutual friend, are also imprisoned for life by human trafficking.

All were sentenced to a 10 -year concurrent prison for kidnapping.

“I am also ordering the entry of their names to the child protection registry,” Erasmus ruled. “There is nothing that can find that it is redeemer and worthy of a smaller prayer than the toughest I can impose,” he said.

Erasmus said that the fact that Smith and his two coacked were drug users was not an excuse, the Reuters news agency reported.

Smith was present in the court and sat during the one -hour procedure with an impassive look.

The judge said that the mother of three children was a manipulative and had demonstrated “no indication of remorse” or concern for Joshlin’s disappearance.

The verdict took cheers in the courtroom.

Joshlin’s grandmother was also present in the court with a white shirt stamped with images of the young woman.

Dramatic turns after Joshin disappeared

Initially, Smith was a sympathy figure when his son disappeared, causing a massive search operation throughout the country.

Photos showed by Joshlin’s striking eyes, the wide smile and brown pigtails flooded the Internet.

The case attracted national attention, including a minister who offered a reward of one million Rand ($ 54,000) for their safe performance.

But he took a turn when the prosecutors alleged that Smith sold his daughter to a traditional healer, who was interested in his eyes and fair complexion.

The judge did not say in his ruling who was sold the girl or why.

Witnesses at the trial, which began in March, included the girl’s teacher and a pastor, who said the mother had told her the planned sale of her son in 2023.

Police said Thursday that they had extended the search beyond the borders of South Africa.

South Africa has one of the highest crime rates in the world and the kidnapping of children is increasing.

There were more than 17,000 kidnappings in South Africa in the financial year 2023/2024, an increase of 11 percent with respect to the previous year, according to police statistics. The data does not specify the ages of the victims.
