A Romanian tourist spent almost a month in prison after the police confused him with a criminal wanted the first day of his vacation in Italy, his lawyer said on Friday.
“The nightmare is over,” said Ovidiu A. when he left Poresone’s prison in northern Italy on Thursday, the local newspaper Corriere del Veneto reported.
“He was finally able to meet with his family,” who had been waiting for him since August 24, on his arrest, said his lawyer from Rosa to News.
Originally from Iasi, Romania, Ovidiu A. had come to spend a few days with his family in Caorle, near Venice.
I would discover that he shares a name with a Romanian criminal searched, previously sentenced to two years in prison in Italy for aggravated robbery.
The name, registered at the hotel upon arrival, caused an alert, and the tourist was arrested by the Carabinieri in his first breakfast.
His lawyer explained that he had fought to gather evidence demonstrating that it was a case of erroneous identity, since the initial trial for aggravated robbery dated 2014 and the final sentence to 2020.
“Police, prison, court and Carabinieri systems do not communicate with each other. I had to request the documentation of each office,” he said.
According to the Veneto, the tourist and his family are expected to continue their vacations in Italy for a few more days before returning to Romania.

He “has decided to enjoy at least a few days on the beach, which had been his goal,” the newspaper said.
“The damage was huge, but faced it with great dignity and calm,” his lawyer told Corriere del Veneto.
