The United Kingdom will recognize Palestine as a state in September unless Israel takes “substantive steps” to end the “frightening situation in Gaza“British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Tuesday.

Addressing journalists in Downing Street, the prime minister said that the United Kingdom will recognize Palestine as a state in the United Nations General Assembly in September unless Israel takes a series of measures, including the establishment of a high fire in Gaza, a commitment to stop the annexation of the holiday territory, and a dissent to work towards a peace process that implies a solution of two status.

“Meanwhile, our message to Hamas terrorists has not changed and unequivocal. They must immediately release all hostages, register in a high fire, disarm and accept that they will not participate in the Gaza government,” Starmer added.

Speaking at the UN Headquarters in New York, moments after Starmer had finished speaking, British Foreign Minister David Lammy said that the United Kingdom government had made this decision since the “solution of two states is in danger.”

“Allow me to be clear: the rejection of the Netanyahu government of a solution of two states is incorrect. It is morally badly and is strategically badly. It gives the interest of Israeli people, closing the only way to a fair and lasting peace, and that is why we are determined to protect the viability of a solution of two states,” Lammy said.

In a statement about X, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized the decision of the United Kingdom, writing that “Starmer rewards the monstrous terrorism of Hamas and punishes his victims.”

“A jihadist state on the border of Israel today will threaten Britain tomorrow. The appeasement towards jihadist terrorists always fails. It will also fail you. It will not happen,” said Netanyahu.

The Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs also condemned the decision of the United Kingdom and described it as a “reward for Hamas” that “harms efforts to achieve a high fire in Gaza and a framework for the release of hostages.”

Speaking to journalists on Air Force One on Tuesday, President Trump said he did not discuss the decision with Starmer during his bilateral meeting in Scotland one day before the announcement.

Sitting next to Starmer on Monday, Trump addressed the situation in Gazasaying that the United States will provide food to the people of Gaza and work to eliminate barriers to humanitarian aid.

“Some of those children are, that is real things of hunger,” Trump said Monday. “I see it. And you can’t pretend that. So we will be even more involved.

He added: “I told Israel, maybe I had to do it in a different way.”

A Downing Street spokeswoman said in a statement that Starmer spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the phone with respect to Tuesday’s announcement.

“He [Starmer] He said that the situation in Gaza was intolerable and that the need for humanitarian access is now more pressing than ever. He urged the prime minister to take immediate measures to raise all the restrictions on help access and make those who suffer in Gaza the food they need, “said the spokeswoman.

The Starmer’s office spokeswoman said that the prime minister had also spoken by phone with the president of the Palestinian authority Mahmoud Abbas, as well as the Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and King Abdullah II of Jordan about the United Kingdom’s plan to recognize the Palestinian status.

Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France It would recognize Palestine as a State and formalize that decision in the UN General Assembly in September.

“According to its historical commitment to a fair and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the state of Palestine,” Macron said at that time. “The urgent priority today is to end the war in Gaza and relieve the civilian population.”

Netanyahu said that Israel “strongly” condemned that decision and said that “rewarding terror and runs the risk of creating another Iranian power, as Gaza became.”

“A Palestinian state in these conditions would be a launch platform to annihilate Israel, not to live in peace by their side. Let’s be clear: the Palestinians do not look for a state along with Israel; they look for a state instead of Israel,” said the Israeli leader in an X

That announcement occurred when the pressure has been set up in Israel to allow More helps Gaza As the images of hungry Palestinian children have attracted generalized worldwide attention during the past week. International pressure led Israel during the weekend to announce measures, including humanitarian daily breaks in the fight in parts of Gaza and Airdrops.

The main diplomat of France, Jean-Noël Barot, eliminated the announcement of the United Kingdom Prime Minister in a social media post.

“Together, through this fundamental decision and our combined efforts, we break the endless cycle of violence and we will reopen the perspective of peace in the region,” said Barot.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry lists 149 countries that currently recognize the State of Palestine. That number would increase to 151 if France and the United Kingdom formalize Palestine recognition as a state in September.

According to the most recent figures published by the Gaza Ministry of Health, at least 60,000 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict of Israel-Ahamas began.
