President Donald Trump delivered what many experts warned would be a lie-filled State of the Union address Tuesday, and Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) walked out before the president had finished.

The Democrat shared his reason on social media shortly before 11 p.m.

“I left the State of the Union because I couldn’t stand hours of Trump’s lies,” Warner wrote Tuesday night on Bluesky. “Americans know the truth: It is driving up prices and ruining our economy. We are a better country than this.”

Trump delivered the longest State of the Union address in history and entered it with his lowest approval ratings in five years. He spent much of his time outright lying about what he claimed were his accomplishments.

Trump said the economy is “roaring like never before,” even though it grew just 2.2% in 2025 (less than in any year under former President Joe Biden) and falsely said gas now costs “less than $2.30 a gallon in most states.”

Warner reportedly hoped before the speech that Trump would at least discuss a possible US war against Iran, arguing that “it’s up to the president to make the case” about what his goals are and “how we’re going to protect American interests in the region.”

“If we don’t hear it tonight, we need to hear it very, very, very soon,” Warner said.

Trump did not share specific details about the possible conflict and simply confirmed that both diplomacy and military force remain on the table.

But Warner lasted much longer in Tuesday’s speech than many of his peers. Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) was expelled before Trump even began speaking for holding a sign protesting the racist video Trump posted of former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama.

Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) walked out after shouting about the fatal shootings last month of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents. Omar yelled at the president: “You’ve killed Americans!”

Some Democrats chose to skip the event entirely, while others brought survivors of the late child predator Jeffrey Epstein. Trump has attempted to distance himself from his known past with Epstein.

While he was clearly frustrated by the speech, Warner seemed prepared for it.

“Prepare for hours of lies from the president tonight,” he wrote Tuesday afternoon on Bluesky. “Americans know the truth: He is ruining our economy, spending tens of billions on an out-of-control secret police, and lining his pockets with deception after deception.”
