Trump announces tariffs on 8 countries until the US controls Greenland
President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that several European countries would face a tariff on all goods shipped to the United States until the United States secures an agreement for “the complete and total purchase” of Greenland.
“World peace is at stake!” he wrote in Truth Social, adding that both China and Russia “want” Greenland, which is now the territory of Denmark.
“They currently have two dog sleds for protection, one of them recently added,” he joked.
“Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland have traveled to Greenland, for unknown purposes,” he continued, citing countries that have sent troops to Greenland amid Trump’s repeated threats of a US takeover.
He then declared that starting February 1, the countries he listed would face a “10% tariff on any and all goods shipped to the United States,” which will increase to 25% in June.
“This tariff will be due and payable until such time as an agreement is reached for the complete and complete purchase of Greenland,” he wrote.

The post comes a day after Trump publicly reflected on using tariffs to punish countries that did not support his seizure of Greenland.
“I can impose a tariff on countries if they don’t agree with Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security,” he said Friday at an unrelated event on rural health care.
Earlier this month, Trump told reporters at the White House that the United States would “do something in Greenland whether you like it or not.”
He also stated: “I would like to reach an agreement the easy way, but if we don’t do it the easy way, we will do it the hard way.”
