Trump congratulates Team USA after winning men’s hockey gold in Olympic thriller

President Donald Trump reacted Sunday to the U.S. men’s ice hockey team’s overtime victory against Canada to win the gold medal at the 2026 Winter Games.

Jack Hughes scored the winning goal past Canadian goalkeeper Jordan Binnington. It was Team USA’s first gold medal in the sport since the “Miracle on Ice” team accomplished the feat at the 1980 Olympics.

As Americans celebrated in Milan, Italy, the president reacted on Truth Social.

“Congratulations to our great USA Ice Hockey team. WON GOLD. WOW!” he wrote on the social media platform.

“WHAT A GAME!!!” he added. “A LOT OF WINS!!!”

Trump’s political pressure on Canada helped reignite the rivalry between the two nations on the ice. It all started last year when Team USA and Canada battled each other during the 4 Nations Face-Off.

The Americans did not return home with victory in the tournament, but they delivered when global status counted.

Matt Boldy scored the Americans’ first goal in the first half. The Minnesota Wild star split two Canadian defenders and his shot beat Binnington.

Although Cale Makar tied the game in the second period, neither team allowed a goal in the third. American goalie Connor Hellebuyck blocked 40 shots and stopped some of Canada’s best chances late in the game.
