Trump Stooge Wants to Bring Back Wood-Paneled Pickups and Oh, the Reactions
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has a pipe dream. An impossible dream, to be more specific.
And it’s about trucks.
On Wednesday, the Trump administration announced a proposal that would weaken some pesky vehicle mileage rules currently in place to minimize air pollution in the auto industry.
The new standards would reduce the industry’s fleet-wide average miles per gallon for light vehicles from 50.4 miles per gallon under a Biden-era rule to about 34.5 miles per gallon by the 2031 model year.
“This rule will actually allow you to bring back the 1970s truck, maybe with little wood panels on the side,” Duffy proposed. “We can give options back to consumers, so yes, the minivan is awesome, but maybe the pickup truck will be great, too.”

Although the pickup truck was common on American roads in the mid-20th century, it lost market share to SUVs and crossovers and has not been produced in the U.S. since 2020, according to TopSpeed.com.
But while Duffy may be nostalgic for the wood-paneled truck, his enthusiasm didn’t appear to be shared by others on social media.

Duffy’s truck revival dream isn’t his only recent desire to return to the days of yore that has made him a target of ridicule.
Last month, he suggested Americans bring “civility” back to air travel by saying please and thank you to other passengers, only to be reminded of the many discourteous comments made by his fearless leader, Donald Trump.
