Uber expands the preference for female drivers nationwide

For many cyclists, getting from point A to point B is easy. Open the app, request a ride and that’s it. But for many women, the experience may seem different. Comfort, safety and peace of mind can play a role when getting into a stranger’s car.
That feedback is what pushed Uber to introduce a feature designed specifically for women. The company calls it Women Preferences and it is now expanding nationally in the United States.
After early pilots and millions of rides around the world, the feature now offers female passengers the option to request female drivers in more cities across the country.
The idea is simple. Give women more control over how they travel and how they earn.

How Uber’s female driver preference feature works
The new option allows women travelers to request rides with women drivers directly in the app. If the feature is available in your city, you’ll see the Women Drivers option when you request a ride. Selecting this indicates that you prefer to be matched with a female driver when possible.
Here’s how the feature works:
- Female travelers can request a ride with a female driver when booking a ride.
- Passengers can book a ride in advance with a female driver
- Riders can toggle a preference in their settings to increase their chances of matching with female drivers.
Uber notes that preference increases the probability of matching. It doesn’t guarantee it. Waiting times may also be longer in some cases, depending on driver availability. If passengers need a faster pickup, they can revert to the standard ride option.
More control for female Uber drivers
The update is not just about passengers. It also adds new options for women who drive on the platform. While the overall program is called Women’s Preferences, drivers can enable a setting called Women’s Riders Preference within the Uber Driver app.
Female drivers can toggle this option to prioritize female passengers’ ride requests. This allows them to choose which trip requests they want to receive. Uber says about one in five drivers on the platform in the United States are women, and the new feature is designed to give those drivers more control over how they work.
For some drivers, that extra layer of control can make a significant difference in how comfortable they feel while working. It also gives drivers more flexibility in how they earn money through the platform.
Uber drivers’ preference for teenage accounts
In cities where teen accounts are supported, families can also use this feature. Parents and guardians can request female drivers for teen passengers. The option works for both on-demand trips and scheduled trips. For many families, this adds another layer of peace of mind when younger passengers need transportation.

Why Uber launched the female driver preference feature
According to Uber, the idea behind Women Preferences came directly from user feedback. The women told the company they wanted more control over who they travel with and more flexibility when using the app.
An Uber spokesperson told CyberGuy that the feature was created after hearing directly from female passengers and drivers. “Women asked for more options and we built them with Women’s Preferences,” said Brooke Anderson, director of product communications at Uber. “This feature exists because women told us it should, and we’re proud to expand Women’s Preferences across the country and bring more flexibility and control to millions more women.”
Uber first launched a version of the Women Rider Preference feature for drivers in Saudi Arabia in 2019, after women gained the legal right to drive. In the United States, pilot tests began in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Detroit before expanding testing to other cities. Since then, the program has grown rapidly. More than 230 million trips around the world have used Women Preferences. The feature is now expanding nationwide in the United States.

What does this mean to you?
If you use Uber regularly, the change can offer you a new layer of options. Riders who prefer to ride with female drivers now have an easier way to request that option. It may help some passengers feel more comfortable, especially during overnight trips or when traveling alone.
For female drivers, the feature provides more control over which rides they accept. That flexibility can help encourage more drivers to stay active on the platform. For families, the teen account option adds another setting that can make travel requests seem more manageable.
The feature will not replace standard ride matching. It simply adds another option that passengers and drivers can use according to their preferences.
