Zohran Mamdani brutally shoots down Trump’s handling of ICE crackdown: murder
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani denounced the “horrible” crisis unfolding in Minnesota and vowed to do “everything in my power” to ensure that New York City is not the target of a similar crackdown on immigration by President Donald Trump’s administration.
During an interview on Sunday’s episode of “This Week” that took place before Minneapolis resident Alex Pretti was killed by U.S. Border Patrol agents, Mamdani accused the White House of misleading Americans about why an immigration officer shot and killed another person earlier this month.
Federal officials have charged that victim, Renée Good, with attempting to ram Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents with her vehicle in an act of domestic terrorism, despite extensive video evidence and witness accounts that appear to show that Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel were not in imminent danger.
“I think there are too many Americans who are being asked not to believe their own eyes, not to believe their own ears, not to believe their own realities,” Mamdani told ABC’s Jonathan Karl. “And people want to hear the truth.”

“They want to see the truth. And that’s why I described it as a murder because there’s no other way to watch that video and come to a different conclusion.”
Asked if he was concerned that Trump would launch the same type of deportation operations in New York, Mamdani vowed to do whatever was necessary to protect its residents.
“We know that the fear that so many people experience in Minneapolis is a fear that New Yorkers also experience, a fear of being terrorized,” he said. “And I will do everything in my power to ensure that does not happen in New York City.”
When pressed for details on how he would defend New Yorkers, the mayor said: “Whether those tools are the use of the courts or the tools of the bully pulpit or the tools of our own municipal policies, we are going to exhaust all options to protect New Yorkers.
“We want to do everything in our power now to make sure we never get to that stage,” Mamdani added. “But our values, our laws, are not bargaining chips that we will shirk at the first sign of a threat. They are things we will defend.”
During the interview, Karl questioned Mamdani about his calls to abolish ICE and asked how immigration law would be enforced without the department.

“You do it with a little bit of humanity. You know, immigration existed long before ICE. ICE is a modern creation. I’m older than ICE,” he said of the agency, which was created after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
Distinguishing ICE from other parts of the government that oversee immigration laws, Mamdani told Karl: “ICE is an organization that cares little about rules. It’s an organization that operates with reckless impunity and seems to delight in breaking those kinds of rules. And that’s what gives people a real sense of fear.”
While the Department of Homeland Security did not respond to News themezone’s question about whether there were plans to expand immigration enforcement operations in New York, Tricia McLaughlin, the department’s deputy secretary of public affairs, described Mamdani’s comments as dangerous and inaccurate:
“The attacks and demonization of ICE law enforcement are wrong. Because of smears like this, our ICE officers now face a 1,300% increase in attacks against them as they risk their lives to arrest murderers, rapists, pedophiles, gang members, and terrorists.
“While Mayor Mamdani, Governor Hochul and their sanctuary politicians across the state have released nearly 7,000 criminal illegal aliens from their jails in New York communities, ICE authorities are arresting criminals and saving countless American lives.
“Mayor Mamdani should be thanking our law enforcement for removing these dangerous criminals from his city, NOT vilifying law enforcement.”
