Zohran Mamdani thinks about whether having a boyfriend is embarrassing
Zohran Mamdani she wants to make sure all her constituents have affordable housing, universal child care, and boyfriends who don’t make them cringe.
He elected mayor of New York City appeared in “boy problems”podcast on Tuesday and they asked me about a recent Vogue article which asked if heterosexual women find it “embarrassing” to have a boyfriend nowadays.

“The women who were interviewed in the article,” Plank informed Mamdani, “said that having a boyfriend felt almost Republican. That it’s going to humiliate you in some way. If you have a boyfriend, you shouldn’t post him on IG.”
Plank then asked Mamadani if she agreed with the sentiment that having a boyfriend is mortifying.
“No,” Mamdani said, before offering some sound advice. “But, if you’re worried about your boyfriend embarrassing you, you should probably find a new boyfriend.”
She later added: “Another thing that would be embarrassing is if your boyfriend doesn’t go out to vote.”

The Vogue article Plank was referring to asks whether heterosexual women today are subscribing to the idea of “heterofatalism,” a term coined by academic Asa Seresin in 2019 which describes the resigned belief that heterosexual relationships are emotionally unsatisfying. Seresin notes that this “is expressed in the form of regret, shame, or hopelessness from direct experience.” An example of this “performative disaffiliation with heterosexuality” according to an article in New York Times Magazineis a straight woman who complains to her friend that a relationship with a man didn’t work out and wishes she were gay so she could date the friend she trusts.
At the beginning of her interview, Plank asked Mamdani for her opinion on the “crisis of male loneliness” and noted that many women who come to her podcast say that the discourse surrounding the term makes them feel that somehow “it is up to women to solve this problem of young men feeling more isolated.”
Plank asked Mamdani if he would implement any policies to try to resolve it.

“I think that, first of all, it is not at all the responsibility of women to solve this crisis,” she said. “I think it is a crisis that is born from more systemic forces, and many of them s have to do with this greater sense of alienation in today’s world, as things become more and more expensive for people and the connections between people are fraying.”
He noted that many New Yorkers who participated in his campaign made friends simply by campaigning.
“And I think that’s also something I’m really interested in as the city’s next mayor: How do we create more third spaces? How do we create more places where people can hang out? Can people be themselves without this constant pressure of having to spend money on every interaction they have?”
